Folklife Kudos

To: Gayle Robinson, Pacific Sound Chorus Marketing Manager

Permit me, once again, to thank the Pacific Sound Chorus for its splendid participation at the 2011 Northwest Folklife Festival. What was so special about the Chorus is that besides performing, its director and members then conducted two singing workshops for the "shower singers." The Intiman Theater Choral Courtyard Stage is the only place at Northwest Folklife (or anywhere I know of) where any one can stand next to a trained performer and sing-along and be made to feel he or she contributed. To this end Pacific Sound Chorus really has no equal. Members of the public are made to feel welcomed; the initial shyness is soon overcome and time and time again, non-singers suddenly find they have a voice and are singing with others in harmonies they had just dreamed about. To the Choral Courtyard Stage the Pacific Sound Chorus is a pillar of community involvement.

By now it is a given that the Pacific Sound Chorus has a standing invitation to this Folklife workshop stage. Your director, Susan Kegley, is one of the most supportive directors I have ever seen. No one willing to step up and join in a chorus workshop is ever embarrassed or frustrated or overwhelmed, instead, it is like being made an honorary member of a very large and very supportive family. Maestro Kegley and the Chorus will work with any one and take them on a journey never forgotten. After the last workshop one person who sang along in the "tag" segment was on "cloud nine" when she realized that she was harmonizing with a national champion quartet. It was, she told me, what Northwest Folklife should be all about; that great singers and a class organization reaches out and takes the time to bring one person along or a hundred. I suspect being permitted to dance with the Rockettes or sing with the cast of a Broadway or play basketball on the same team as Michael Jordan would be the equivalent. In one stroke you are with real professionals moreover, you are treated as if you are one of them--that is what makes the Chorus so...decent.
